Aberdeen developed around its harbour. Once a thriving fishing port in the north-east of Scotland, it is now the "Energy Capital of Europe" with modern transport links. Aberdeen is an attractive city with green parks and open spaces. The city boasts spectacular architecture, an international population and a booming oil industry. To the east of the city lie the North Sea and a coastline of sandy beaches, while to the west stretches Royal Deeside, the beautiful valley of the River Dee. Just half-an-hour from the buzz of Union Street is the tranquillity of one of the most beautiful parts of Scotland. A comprehensive guide to Aberdeen and its surrounds can be found at www.visitscotland.com. Founded in 1495 as King's College, the University of Aberdeen is one of the oldest universities in the UK. It boasts the first chair of medicine in the English-speaking world (1497). There are 14,000 students of 120 nationalities studying 550 undergraduate courses and a wide range of postgraduate degree programmes. EUBS2009 is being run by the Aberdeen Hyperbaric Medicine Unit. The Unit, staffed by NHS Grampian and the University of Aberdeen, is part of Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, the 1000-bed university teaching hospital, which serves the city and much of the north-east of Scotland. The meeting is also the British Hyperbaric Association Annual Scientific Meeting, with their AGM being held on Friday afternoon.
