The Frederick Love Keays Symposium on diving and decompression illness 1909-2009

Frederick L Keays was medical director of construction work on East River tunnels in New York from 1904 to 1910, where he gained remarkable experience of decompression illness. In a period of 557 days, with about one thousand men a day working in compresed air, his medical department saw 3692 cases of compressed air illness, with 20 deaths. His account was published in 1909 and remains one of the best monographs on decompression illness. This meeting commemorates that publication with a symposium on the disease.
